Lean PD Best Practices: Danfoss
Danfoss, one of the world’s leading suppliers of energy-efficient solutions, was founded in 1933 in Nordborg, Denmark. Since then, the company grew from a solo enterprise into a world leader in power hydraulics, cooling, drives and heating markets.
Danfoss Trata, Danfoss’ heating segment competence center in Ljubljana, Slovenia, has pioneered and led lean product development implementations since 1999, when Allen C. Ward first visited their R&D department. Right at the beginning of Danfoss’ lean product development journey, lean improvement was grounded on a voluntary basis, with very few resources dedicated to creating tools and educating others to adopt lean thinking. In 2007, with the launch of Danfoss Product Development Program as part of the Danfoss Business System, the Lean Product Development initiative and its goal to enable transformation by ensuring strategy alignment and support was formalized. Over the years Danfoss developed an internal innovation philosophy and designed its processes around it, while prioritizing the collaborative discovery of customer needs early in each innovation project.
