HISTORY

history

LAA was launched in Switzerland in 2012 as a non-profit spin-off from Ecole Polytechnique Dédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) with a purpose to disseminate and exploit the outcomes of the European Lean Product and Process Development (LeanPPD) project.

In 2009 a consortium of industrial, academic and research organizations was created with an objective to address the industrial need for a comprehensive set of lean methods, design techniques, and tools that ensure successful transformation of an organizations’ product development into a lean environment. As a result of this 4-year project funded by the European FP 7 Framework, a lean product and process development model with an associated toolset was developed. The project outputs represented a foundation for the development of a knowledge-based environment to support value creation in terms of innovation and customization, as well as sustainable and affordable product design. The industrial partners have been involved throughout the development of individual project deliverables and have also tested and validated the model, tools, and enablers.

As part of the LeanPPD project objective to disseminate the project findings to organizations around the world, multiple industrial events and workshops were organized in 2011. The aim of these events was to bring together lean experts and practitioners from Europe and worldwide with a purpose to learn and share the latest developments in the area of lean product and process development, to underpin the current industrial challenges and to enable networking. From 2013, LAA proudly continues this tradition and yearly bring together over 50 practitioners and lean professionals to learn, share best practices and exchange the latest developments, experiences and success stories.

In 2014 LAA has not only welcomed 5 new team members, but it has also developed the Lean Innovation Model that is a result of years of applied research and industrial experiences. The model not only reflects the core principles of lean thinking for product development but also provides a structured framework for their implementation.

Over the course of 2015, LAA has been building its portfolio of gamified and interactive training sessions that will be available for participation from 2017 onwards. 2015 has also been an important year for LAA as we have held our first Lean Product Development Best Practices Discovery Project with 10 innovative and successful companies from Europe and United States and also refreshed our yearly conference to uplift it for modern days. The 2015 Lean Innovation Forum has attracted over 50 participants, over 80% of which were successful lean practitioners.
